Pier 70 in San Francisco: The Largest Mass Timber Office Building in the US

Pier 70 - San Francisco

Scott Barton-Smith, Hacker Architects

A 28-acre waterfront development in San Francisco, Pier 70, will soon be home to North America’s largest mass timber office building—a 310,000-square-foot, 85-foot-high structure with six stories. In this presentation, the project architect will explain motivating factors that led to the selection of mass timber, drawing inspiration from the neighborhood’s culture of creativity, sustainability, and strong opinions. The building design process will also be discussed, highlighting the CLT floor slabs, glue-laminated timber (glulam) columns and beams, steel lateral seismic framing, and metal cladding.
